Musician of the Year 2010, Raymond Lacroix

The board of CBA(Ontario) is pleased to announce that Raymond Lacroix from the Seaway Winds is Musician of the Year, 2010.

RAYMOND LACROIX joined Seaway Winds in 2006 and immediately devoted his talent and energy by being elected the Band’s President, and then, almost single-handedly, drafting, compiling  and submitting the necessary application forms for a sizeable Trillium Foundation grant, of which the total  amount was awarded to  Seaway Winds to purchase much needed instruments and equipment and provide support for the Band’s ongoing performances and guest artists.

Raymond is also  storing at his home and transporting to rehearsals and concerts many of the instruments and equipment, including the baritone  sax, bass clarinet, synthesizer , amps / mic sound system , orchestra bells, and xylophone that were purchased with the Trillium grant. He has also secured his church’s social hall as a rehearsal venue whenever the school music room where Seaway Winds usually practices is unavailable.

Raymond is an accomplished clarinettist and saxophonist, but he is willing to play whatever part is most needed . In Seaway Winds, he has played all the clarinet parts, including 1st chair solo clarinet, tenor sax, baritone sax, even trumpet and percussion, and is currently playing bass clarinet in the Band.

Raymond is fluently bilingual in both written and spoken English and French and is the commentator for all announcements in French where ever Seaway Winds performs.

Raymond is a retired high school instrumental music instructor ,  and directs Seaway Winds when Barb  Hunter, the Music Director, spends the winter in Arizona. Since December, 2007, he has directed the annual Christmas concert , and then continues rehearsing Seaway Winds over the winter months. His influence in the Cornwall community has attracted several already accomplished musicians to join Seaway Winds  as well as some of his former students who wanted to resume playing .

Raymond coordinates and plays in the Seaway Winds Saxophone Ensemble, which performs in venues too small to accommodate the entire band; most particularly  at senior citizens’ residences ,  also at the Cornwall Square mall and the Mayor’s Concert, which has been presented the past two years , featuring local singers and entertainers.

Raymond also developed and maintains Seaway Winds website, www.seawaywinds.ca. He is always promoting Seaway Winds, whether through the website, or his many other involvements in the community, including the French radio station, CHOD-FM. His own  business, Web Designs, is  a Concert Series Sponsor of Seaway Winds .

This past spring, Seaway Winds Board of Directors chose to honour Raymond with the CBA’s Distinguished Musician Award Certificate. Nobody in Seaway Winds has previously been given this award, as it was deemed that the first recipient should “ set the bar”, and Raymond was the unanimous choice for setting a high standard  to follow.

As Seaway Winds heads into its 10th Anniversary season, one of the major contributors for the Band’s success is Raymond’s commitment and talent. His willingness to help out ALL the time, even changing his own personal schedule to accommodate situations when others in the Band could not or would not participate, and also the cheerfulness he displays and  total dedication to each cause in which he is involved.

Dear Colleague,

Happy New Year!!   On the Canadian Band Association’s website, http://www.canadianband.ca/ we publish recent concert programs from bands across Canada.  It would be great to have a program FROM EVERY “LEVEL” (junior high school, senior high school, university, community, military) and FROM EVERY PROVINCE!!
