Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant

.

.

CBA(O) was pleased to receive an Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant in 2008. CBA(O) used the grant for four co-ordinated projects which enhanced the organization's visibility, encouraged membership by all bands in the province of Ontario, provided a scientific understanding of their role in our communities and fostered significant co-operation among them.

.

The projects were:

1. creating a shared music library, offering huge potential for improving the quality of the music offered in performances by our membership and the likelihood of significant future savings.

2. developing a professional survey of all aspects (performance, administration, fund raising, progamming, etc.) of bands in the province. It provided much needed insights into the band movement in the Ontario, insights that were valuable for the national organization as well. The survey was conducted by Roger Mantie, PH.D. Candidate at the University of Toronto. Dr. Mantie is now Assistant Professor of Music Education, School of Music, Boston University. His findings were published in Volume 7, No. 2 of Canadian Winds, the Journal of the Canadian Band Association. The article and survey data is available at the links below:

3. researching and writing a history of the band movement in the KW region. This is undertaken at the request of the KW Historical Society, who offered to publish the article in its bi-annual journal. Through this exercise, the CBA(O) developed a model for other bands which may wish to do similar research and publication.

4. supporting and assisting community bands in Ontario with programs and services that allowed them to improve their programming, fundraising and development. This included the Music is for Life Conference held May 7, 8, 9, and 10, 2009 at the Laurier Centre for Music in the Community on the campus of Wilfrid Laurier University as well as visits by CBA(O) Board members to Ottawa and Orillia to promote the values and benefits of membership.
